Description: Nagib Mahfouz, the Arab world's only Nobel Laureate in Literature, made enormous contributions to the development of the novel genre in his own country-- Egypt, the Arab world in general, and, one might suggest, the world as a whole following his prize in 1988. The talk will consider what precisely was the nature of those contributions, with reference to particular works, along with their particular historical contexts and narrative techniques.
