Description: This course teaches the basics of how the Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system works and how to read basic texts. It combines grammatical and culture explanations, reinforced by written exercises, to enable the reading of ancient Egyptian royal names and basic funerary inscriptions. An excellent course for grade and high school teachers, archaeology or language students, and anyone interested in learning about the ancient Egyptian language.
Course Text: How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-By-Step Guide by Collier and Manley (cost: usually less than $20 at Amazon, Powells, etc.)
