ALL DAY SEMINAR: Interpreting Amarna, the Reign of the Heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten

Description: Dr. Donald Redford and Dr. Susan Redford have spent decades exploring Amarna and interpreting clues to the reign of Akhenaten from history, funerary practices and their work with the Akhenaten Temple Project in Luxor. For their ARCE-OC all-day seminar, they will reveal what is known so far about the reign of Akhenaten and provide personal accounts of the recent discovery of the tomb of Parennefer, Akhenaten's butler.

About the Presenters: Dr. Donald B. Redford is a professor of Egyptology in the departments of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and History at Pennsylvania State University. He is an internationally renowned scholar of ancient Egypt and Biblical studies, and a noted expert on the 18th Dynasty Amarna period. Prof. Redford is the author of several books, including "Akhenaten, The Heretic King" (Princeton, 1984), "Israel, Canaan & Egypt in Ancient Times" (Princeton, 1992) and numerous articles. He has been frequently featured in series and documentaries on A&E, The History Channel and BBC. Prof. Redford has been the director of the Akhenaten Temple Project in Luxor since 1972.

Dr. Susan Redford is an archaeologist who has worked with the Akhenaten Temple Project for the past 23 years. Currently, she is a professor at Pennsylvania State University. She is also the author of "The Harim Conspiracy: An Investigation into the Murder of Ramesses III" (Northern Illinois, 2001), "The Tomb of Ri'a" (Toronto, 1994) and numerous articles. As field director of the Theban Tomb Survey since its inception in 1992, she has mounted annual expeditions to the Valley of the Nobles at Luxor.
