Description: The lecture is composed as a comprehensive overview to the history and development of the obelisk in Ancient Egypt. Starting with the early evidence from the time of the Old Kingdom, the focus will then shift to examples of the New Kingdom, especially the monumental obelisks of queen Hatshepsut at Karnak. Beside the many religious and dogmatic aspects, problems of quarry-work, transportation and erection will be addressed.
