Description: Although painting has been the focus of much research, relatively little has addressed the processes involved. Several ostraca from the Theban Necropolis dating to the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty contain a number of terms relating to building and decorating tombs and temples. To these may be added additional Eighteenth Dynasty vocabulary for pigments, materials, and artisans. In this talk I will explore the methods of painting, the terminology for the procedures and materials of tomb painting in the Eighteenth Dynasty, and the cultural valence of the vocabulary associated with painting.
