Description: Teams from the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, New York University and the Department of Documentation of the Supreme Council of Antiquities have embarked on a joint project to produce a comprehensive publication of the Temple of Ramesses II at Abydos. Although the temple is rightly renowned for its brightly colored reliefs and the dramatic scenes of the Egyptian-Hittite Battle of Kadesh, it has thus far received only piecemeal publication. This presentation will discuss the significance of the scenes in this remarkable temple for the political and religious history of the Ramesside history. It will also describe methods that have been developed for recording the temple scenes and inscriptions by means of digital epigraphy that minimize distortion usually associated with the photographic process and employed advanced computer technology for streamlining archaeological reconstructions. These techniques allow scholars to produce highly accurate line drawings and photographs rapidly, yet without the potential damage sometimes associated with traditional epigraphical methods.
