Description: Given modern lifestyles, it is tempting to conclude that atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (clogged arteries) is exclusively a disease of modern society that did not affect our ancient ancestors. Challenging this conclusion, today's distinguished speakers--all accomplished medical professionals--present their amazing findings from CAT scan and X-ray analysis of dozens of mummified Ancient Egyptians.

PART I: Dr. Ben Harer: "Women's Health in Ancient Egypt" Dr. Harer is an OB/GYN physician who is bringing his popular talk on women's health issues in Ancient Egypt to the crowd at the Bowers. This talk draws large audiences so be sure to arrive early.

PART II: Dr. Greg Thomas and Drs. Linda and Jim Sutherland: "Secrets of Ancient Egyptian Mummies Revealed: New Findings From Recent CAT Scans and X-Rays" All three of these physicians participated in The Horus Study, which sought to identify cardiovascular structures and arterial calcifications among Ancient Egyptians. They performed whole-body, multislice computed tomography (CT) scanning on 52 Ancient Egyptian mummies from the Middle Kingdom to the Greco-Roman period. In the fall of 2011, Drs. Linda and Jim Sutherland joined Dr. Harer's research team to image more mummies in Cairo. In 2006, the Sutherlands also imaged the six mummies at the Bowers Museum loaned by the British Museum.
