Description: While the “House of Life” or per-ankh is familiar to Egyptologists as the designation for the temple scribal center, the nature of this institution is still quite obscure. Such basic questions as what was the primary function of the House of Life, what was its physical appearance, and who were the staff have yet to be satisfactorily answered. In this lecture Dr. Jasnow will present and comment on the evidence for the House of Life, paying special attention to the particularly important sources from the Graeco-Roman Period.
