Language students from the summer 2008 class
In mid-June 36 American university students will step on to the baking tarmac at Cairo International Airport and start a language learning experience destined to change them forever, or at least for the next two months.
The 20 beginning and 16 advanced Arabic language students were selected through a competitive process to participate in the Critical Languages Scholarship Program, sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. ARCE has hosted this program in Cairo since 2006.
The two-month program includes 20 hours per week of Arabic classes that will be provided by the American University in Cairo. In addition, students will be exposed to Egypt's magnificent history, from ancient to contemporary, through ARCE's active speakers program and visits to cultural heritage sites.
The summer language program aims to provide the students with opportunities to practice their language skills, and put language learning within a cultural context. American university students of all ages and disciplines currently pursuing undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees will make up this year's cohort.
