ARCE member Dr. Kathryn Bard is among two hundred and twenty-nine leaders and visionaries to be elected Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and
Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. Announced yesterday, the 2010 class of Fellows is composed of leaders in the sciences, social sciences, the humanities, the arts, business and
public affairs and includes winners of the Nobel, Pulitzer, and Shaw Prizes; MacArthur and Guggenheim
fellows; and Grammy, Tony, and Oscar Award winners.
Dr. Bard, Associate Professor of Archaeology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University and Vice-President of the ARCE New England chapter, is the sole Egyptologist on the list, which also includes film director Francis Ford Coppola, actors John Lithgow and Denzel Washington, journalist Christiane Amanpour, and Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Foreign Honorary Member).
"This is the greatest honor of my life," says Bard, whose excavations at the Middle Kingdom pharaonic harbor at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis have shed new light on the seafaring ways of the ancient Egyptians. Her fascinating work largely informed the NOVA documentary "Building Pharaoh's Ship," which aired on PBS in January. Bard will discuss her latest fieldwork and research during the upcoming ARCE Annual Meeting, April 23-25, in Oakland, California.
